Exploring Sculpture and 3D: Creative Workshops (Online)

2 November @ 6:00 pm - 23 November @ 7:00 pm

Online workshops exploring sculpture and 3D, enabling you to experiment with creative techniques and ideas in a virtual group. These virtually facilitated workshops enable you to experiment with creative techniques and explore new ideas in an online social group but from the comfort of your own home.

During weekly workshops, participants are encouraged to experiment with different materials, observe everyday objects in a new way and to consider how we interact with the spaces and places all around us using our current art exhibitions as inspiration. As a group we’ll play on themes of shape, food, people and spaces whilst considering ‘who are we?’ and ‘how do we connect to each other?’.

Week/Session One: Find inspiration from the Venus of Willendorf (the mother of all sculpture) in artwork by exhibiting artist Erika Verzutti. Consider body shapes to construct using papier mache, clay or plasticine alongside everyday geometric objects.

Week/Session Two: Take a playful approach to shape within unexpected objects as artist Erika Verzutti does in their work. Consider ‘traces of touch’; imprints that can be left behind on objects using clay or salt dough and items of food.

Week/Session Three: Experiment with scale and size to create sculptural works in the gallery which occupy the same space as the exhibiting artists. Utilising bamboo and wood, card and paper.

Week/Session Four: Explore how spaces/rooms might change the way we feel and connect to other people through the artwork of Allison Katz and Melanie Matranga. Create a 3D model of a room within a room from card, paper and paint.

In these workshops you will:

  • meet new people and try new things
  • gain practical experience of creating sculptures and using a variety of artistic materials
  • be introduced to theories around sculpture and sculptural art/3D models
  • develop an understanding of the themes and techniques used by artists in the current exhibitions

“Well! Who’d have thought this could be so much fun!” “(this workshop) makes me think of using new materials and new possibilities.”

  • All adults welcome (18+) but we particularly recommend these workshops for mature adults; people who’re retired, working part time, new visitors to Nottingham Contemporary/art galleries, with some interest in the arts, who like to socialise, be creativity and/or who enjoy learning and doing new things.
  • Workshops are standalone; it is encouraged though not compulsory to attend each of the 4 sessions.
  • No prior knowledge/experience is required, suitable for all levels. You do not need to have seen the exhibition or visited the gallery.
  • Online workshops will take place using Zoom – please download this application on your device before the sessions.
  • Art materials are provided (delivered by post for the online workshops or provided on arrival for the in-person workshops)

£15 per session in person or £7.50* online. Enjoy a £5 discount if you book onto all four workshops.
